Middle of last week I saw a contest on sinful_graphics with the theme 'Submission' that I thought I might enter. I don't normally enter icon design contests, if only for the reason that I'm not overly confident in my design skills at the present, despite mrshannibal's assertion that I'm some sort of icon making deity (though I appreciate the praise naturally).

Still and all, I have more than a few bdsm'y bases from the terabytes of porn that I've been assembling over the years, and thought that I could whip up a couple icons to post to the contest and see how they flew.

Long story short, the ones I posted were pretty well received, one managed to garner enough votes that it came in 4th place and the other one was selected for a 'Banner Maker's Choice', so I managed to win something my first time out...not too shabby if I do say so myself.

Just goes to show I don't have to be so down on myself, I can actually create some very neat things when I put my mind to it. Yay me.

I was browsing websites and found a rather neat little animated gif attached to a banner on a fire department website....thought it might be something rather neat to crop out, resample and make into an icon.

Unfortunately, LJ icon restrictions state that an icon has to be at the most 100x100 pixels and no larger than 40kb. The original animation was 400kb as it was on the website I took it from, and even when I culled it a little, it was still 30k too large. The tricks that I know about for shrinking the size of an animation include using fewer colors in the animation, cutting out extra frames in the animation and finally reducing the size of the overall animation from the most (100x100) to as small as you can go without losing all focus on what you're trying to show.

Above is what I got when I culled out every other frame on the animation and cut off the last part with the fire truck passing by, then the final shot of the truck parked in the fire station. What I really wanted was the oncoming and then departing shots of the truck, lights flashing and so on, -that- seemed to be more of a focus than the rest of it, and it looks pretty good, in spite of what Animation Shop does when it 'optimizes' the animation, making it more grainy and blurry while supposedly its -upgrading- the overall picture etc.
I'm -still- fiddling with it, but I'm getting closer to the result that I want.
This is the first final result I got from the animation, it comes at -just- under the required 40k limit and there are an abysmal 31 colors listed on the icon.

In the midst of doing other things, I've also gotten back into making icons, though it was a comment/request by mrshannibal that urged me onward back into it.

She's been a fan of Taylor Hicks from American Idol and wanted to express her fandom by having some icons made. I took a stab at it and she liked what I did enough to give me a few more to do, even going so far as to let me have free rein to suggest things and just play around with the tools at my disposal.

Here's what I came up with, have been getting rather giddy emails from her saying that she's liking the results, so I figured that was a good thing.

Even so I've also been getting back into using templates now that I remembered how to do the darn things. Took a few run throughs of some tutorials from psptutorials, but I managed finally to find the right memory that I had stored away and I'm back to getting what I wanted accomplished, as well as liking the results.

If you're inclined to take, please DO credit and DON'T hotlink the images, save them to your own hard drive and don't eat up my bandwidth, thanks.

Haven't done much lately with Animation Shop 3, but I thought since I managed to get a good capping program and the ability to cap Family Guy episodes I'd give it a whirl again.

Here's the result, its not perfect, but I thought it came out nicely.

I'm doing a basic tutorial here on an icon I just finished. Its a screencap from Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines.

Here we go!Collapse )
Pretty simple, but I'm still getting started, so simple is where I go from here.

This is the inital entry for this community.

Essentially, this is -my- icon community, where I post my icons, my hints, tutorials, whatever, so I can have a seperate presence on LJ for my icon creativity etc. If you should happen to find yourself here, feel free to learn, take, borrow, but please don't steal or hotlink. Credit is nice and appreciated, but I wouldn't go so far as to say its required, though I would appreciate you being honest about who created the icons.
